Support for Renters

The Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced supports for renters today.

He noted no one will be evicted on April 1 for non-payment of rent.  Civil evictions of non-payment of rent will be suspended until April 30.

There will be no rent increases, including previously announced rent increases, while Alberta’s public state of emergency remains in effect.

No late fees may be issued for missing rent payments.

Landlords will be obligated to negotiate payment plans while the emergency remains in effect, taking into consideration the tenant’s financial situation.  Renters will be obligated to pay their rents as fully and consistently as possible.  Both the renters and landlords will have to take into account the financial supports from the provincial and federal governments that are made available to them.

These supports will be voided if the renter willfully damages the landlord’s property.
