Caregiver Credit

Caring for someone with a physical or mental impairment who is dependent on you is challenging.  The caregiver credit provides some support if you find yourself in this situation.

Who Can Make the Claim?

This claim is for individuals who support their spouse, common law partner as well as your dependents that include your children or grandchildren and your parents, grandparents, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, niece or nephew.

How Much Can You Claim?

The spousal credit or eligible dependent credit should be claimed before the Canada caregiver credit is claimed.

If you are claiming an amount for your spouse, you may claim up to a maximum of $7,525.

If you are claiming an amount for an adult (age 18 or older), you may also claim up to $7,525.

If you are claiming an amount for a child (under age 18), you may claim $2,350.

Documentation

CRA may ask for some documentation to prove the physical or mental impairment.  This may be provided by your dependent’s doctor.  Form T2201, disability tax credit certificate may also provide both documentation for the Canada caregiver credit as well as access to additional credits.
